Dive into history
In 1462, the village was founded at its present location. The new Arnemuiden was conveniently located and large ships could easily dock there. In 1574 Prince Willem van Oranje granted Arnemuiden city rights from Middelburg, where he was staying at the time.
The city flourished and became an important center for international trade. Arnemuiden made money primarily from the transshipment of goods and the salt trade. The town attracted so much trade (and merchants) that it even had more inns than neighboring Middelburg.
But, the harbor silted up and revenues declined, leaving the town in decline. Fishing vessels could still reach Arnemuiden and a new tradition emerged; fishing. From about 1800, Arnemuiden devoted itself to this.
Traditions
Arnemuiden has always been a close-knit community with a deep-rooted pride. People work hard together, while at the same time staying true to old customs that they love to share with visitors. In the center, information panels tell the story of Arnemuiden's history, customs and practices. There are walking trails and paintings on the walls that reflect the identity of Arnemuiden. Many stories of family members who perished at sea were preserved and passed on from generation to generation. There were also comforting songs such as the most famous member ' The Clock of Arnemuiden'.
Dress
A striking feature of the Arnemuidian costume is the large white top hat that protrudes far out on both sides. The hat is decorated with broderie embroidery instead of lace, as in other Zeeland towns. The upper cap is worn mainly on Sundays, while during the week the ladies wear a lower cap, also decorated with embroidery. They also wear distinctive "beeches" on the upper body.
