On Sunday afternoon, April 27, 2025, the English Church in Middelburg will be the venue for a new edition of the interview series "André's guest. This time André Romijn welcomes Chris van Weel, author of the groundbreaking biography, "For Art and Women's Rights. Mathilde Cohen Tervaert-Israëls 1864-1945".
Chris van Weel takes us into the fascinating life story of Mathilde Cohen Tervaert-Israëls (1864-1945), a feminist avant la lettre and guardian of an unparalleled artistic heritage. Mathilde was a key figure in the struggle for women's rights in the Netherlands, working tirelessly on behalf of unwed mothers and prostitutes, as well as realizing full citizenship for women.
In addition to her feminist work, she inherited the artistic legacy of her father, Jozef Israëls, and brother, Isaac Israëls - both legendary names in Dutch art. Her significant contribution to the distribution and donation of their works to museums in the Netherlands has been little recognized until now.
In conversation with André Romijn, Chris van Weel will not only highlight Mathilde's feminist and art historical impact, but also share his personal story of the writing process and the discoveries he made along the way.
