The synagogue was built in 1705, making it the first synagogue built in the Netherlands outside of Amsterdam. In 1942 the building was seized by the Germans, severely damaged by British shellfire in 1944 during the liberation of Walcheren, and restored in 1994. The synagogue is now again in use by the Jewish Congregation Zeeland.
