Sint Antheunishofje

The Saint Antheunis Court, built in the 17th century, consists of a walled courtyard with small dwellings around it. It was intended for destitute, single women and can be considered an early form of charity. Of the original five hofjes once known to Middelburg, the Sint Antheunishofje is the only one remaining. Although living in the hofje was usually free of charge, residents were expected to attend church regularly and lead a virtuous life.
