City Park Molenwater is a beautiful park to spend an afternoon. The park has a spacious lawn. has plenty of trees, flowers and plants, a bee hotel and amphibian shells for the natterjack toad. And there is that mirror pond with the fountain, which you can sit around. There are also more seating options scattered throughout the park. For a snack and drink, everyone can go to snack bar the Smulhoekje, which also has a terrace, or you can bring your own food and drink. The Molenwater Park is a park for all people.

The park has winding walkways that allow you to explore all parts of the park. There are several play areas for children, including at the water's edge and near the wadis. A slight elevation has been created in the middle of the park, creating height differences.

Innovative water management system

What many people do not know is that an innovative solution has been found in this green urban oasis for all the rainwater that falls in the city park and neighborhood. The mirror pond and wadis are part of an innovative water management system that provides sustainable water collection. The rainwater that falls in the neighborhood or in the park is buffered in the pond or in the wadis, which are located at the edge of the park. In total, the park has as much as 2,000 m3 of space to hold and temporarily store water. To get an idea of how much that is: That's as many as 20,000 100-liter rain barrels, which therefore do not burden the sewer system during heavy rainfall. This also allows the park to cool the city during the heat.

This actually completes the circle. With this innovative water storage the Molenwater returns to its former function. After all, in the 14th century the Molenwater was dug as a catchment basin for excess water from the canals and the river Arne. Now the water storage has been given a more modern look, making the Molenwater Park ready for the future.
