Market

The Marketplace is the ideal starting point for a day of shopping. It connects the main shopping streets. Not to be missed is the beautiful old city hall: one of the most beautiful historic buildings in the Netherlands.

During the Middle Ages, the market was held here, still without the square as we know it today. The market was held next to the Westmonster Church and the adjacent cemetery, which in 1540 was located in the middle of today's square. The church and town hall stood side by side until 1575. Over time, the buildings around the square underwent several changes. From 1881 until the bombing during World War II, the Markt was the starting and finishing point of the streetcar connection between Middelburg and Flushing. The greatest transformation took place after the war. During reconstruction, the shape of the Markt was modified.
