Lock, sluice and tidal mill

Just outside the city center, a lock, sluice and former tidal mill form a historic and functional duo. The lock, built in 1763, was used to move boats from one water level to another when the city still had a direct and natural connection to the sea. The lock ensured that the harbor was washed clean at low tide and that the water had the same direction of flow at both low and high tide. Next to the sluice was the former corn mill, which used tidal power to grind flour. In 1994, the complex was restored. A full-size half-steel cylinder was placed on the site of the original water wheel.
