Lange Jan

In the middle of Middelburg's beautiful historic center, Abbey Tower de Lange Jan towers above the city.

Viewing the tower is definitely a must. During the season it is possible to climb the Lange Jan. With its length of 90.5 meters and 207 steps quite a climb but the view is well worth it. On clear days you can even see the surrounding islands.

Middelburgers owe their nickname to the Lange Jan. Once, in a distant past, an inhabitant of the Zeeland capital (who presumably had looked too deeply into the glass), must have mistaken the glow of the moon on the tower for flames.... Fortunately, the alarmed fire department was able to return home unharmed. Since then the Middelburgers have been called 'Maneblussers'.

207 steps and a fantastic view
