De Koepoort

In the Middle Ages, Middelburg had eight city gates that protected the city from invaders. The current Koepoort was not one of them. It was more of an ornamental gate than a true defensive gate and today is Middelburg's only remaining city gate. The city government decided to replace the Koepoort in the 1930s. Several predecessors had served their purpose, and it was time for a brand new Koepoort. City architect Jan de Munck completed this task in 1739. Since 2019, you can stay (luxuriously) in the Koepoort.
