City Monastery Simpelhuys

The English Church is a remnant of the Cellebroeders monastery. Between 1471 and 1484, the Cellebroeders settled in Middelburg. Behind the town hall they built a monastery and a chapel. Their main task was to bury the dead. From 1592-1629, the monastery's chapel was used as a tapestry workshop. In 1629 the chapel was used as a church of the English Congregation.

A part of the monastery was designated a "simple house" (insane asylum) in 1611. In 1816, it became a soup kitchen.
