On the Markt stands perhaps the city's most photographed building: the Middelburg Town Hall. Feast your eyes and take the time to admire this town hall. The longer you look at it, the more fascinating details you will discover. Gargoyles, statues of Zeeland counts and countesses, turrets, landings, stained glass windows, the red and white shutters. During World War II, the city hall was largely destroyed by fire after a bombing raid. It was decided to renovate or rebuild the existing architecture, including City Hall, in the original style.
