On Friday, Feb. 7, 2025, the atmospheric English Church in Middelburg will be the setting for a special performance of English Baroque music by Musica Gloria. This late Gothic chapel, which was assigned by the magistrate of Middelburg to the English community here in 1629, bears a rich history. For nearly three centuries it served as a church for the English community, and to this day it is still called the English Church.
In this historic setting, the musicians of Musica Gloria - Pieter De Praetere (countertenor), Nele Vertommen (oboe, recorder and lead), Anne-Linde Visser (viola da gamba) and Beniamino Paganini (harpsichord, recorder and lead) - will perform a varied program of works by Henry Purcell, Daniel Purcell, and contemporary Tobias Hume.
The combination of timeless compositions and the unique acoustics of the English Church makes this evening extra special. Masterpieces such as Henry Purcell's Musick for a while, Strike the viol and A new Ground come into their own in this inspiring setting. Tobias Hume adds a light note with his playful pieces, while Daniel Purcell's works complete the program with lyricism and virtuosity.
This evening is a celebration of English Baroque in a historical setting that perfectly complements the music. Immerse yourself in the authentic instruments and refined performance of Musica Gloria, which offers you a lively and affecting look at a rich musical tradition.
